Most of the amendments voted on Tuesday in several states to protect the right to abortion were passed, although many of them will not be binding and will depend on who controls the Congress and the Presidency.

Since the US Supreme Court in June 2022 overturned the Roe vs Wade ruling that protected abortion nationally, many states have enacted restrictive laws, while others have adopted rules to protect it.
On Tuesday, initiatives on abortion were voted in a dozen states, on an election day in which the Americans also had the decision to choose their next president, who, failing to be confirmed mathematically, everything seems to indicate that he will be Donald Trump.
One of the states where abortion was on the ballot was Arizona, which passed an amendment enshrining the right to abortion in the state constitution, according to media projections.
The proposal will create the “fundamental right” to abort until the foetus is viable, that is, until the 24th week of pregnancy, with exceptions after this period if a doctor decides to protect the mother’s life.
Although the Republican has assured in the election campaign that he will not impose a national ban but will let the states choose, Trump has always boasted of being the architect of the elimination of Roe vs Wade.
Among the states that passed pro-abortion amendments on Tuesday was Colorado, which includes the right to abortion in the state constitution and allows public funds for abortions.
In Maryland, a law passed that establishes the right to reproductive freedom and includes “the ability to make and carry out decisions to prevent, continue or terminate one’s own pregnancy”.
In Missouri, another one that establishes the right to reproductive freedom, defined as “the right to make and carry out decisions on all matters related to reproductive health care,” including prenatal care, childbirth, post-natal care, birth control, abortion, care of miscarriages and respectful conditions for childbirth.
In contrast, the initiative was not approved in Florida and therefore a ban on abortion is in force six weeks after it was flagged by Governor Ron de Santis.
